JSB-CO-10 10±0.2 % in delivery form
Cobalt is the most important metal drier for curing coatings based on drying oils and alkyd resins and unsaturated polyester resins. It is required to shorten the surface drying of coatings, varnishes, stains and inks and, in combination with a secondary drier such as zirconium, barium or zinc, will result in uniform through drying of the paint film.
JSB cobalt drier® is used for curing unsaturated polyester in conjunction with methyl ethyl ketone peroxide catalyst.Normal addition rate of metal is 0.0-1% PHR (part per hundred of resin, by weight). Formulated for addition to larger quantities of unsaturated polyester resins and where no reduction in viscosity is desirable, it is used for curing laminates with resistance to chemicals.
CAUTION: catalysts should not be mixed directly with accelerator since they can react with explosive violence.
The first component of curing system, be it a catalyst or an accelerator, should, therefore, be mixed thoroughly before addition of the second component.
NOTE: Drier is not required for pre-dried resins.
In conventional alkyd formulations, the cobalt addition is between 0.03 and 0.08 % metal based on the vehicle solids of the coating and will vary upon the composition of the binder. In printing inks, a combination of Cobalt and Manganese driers is recommended. The amount of cobalt is between 0.03 and 0.05 % based on binder solids. Cobalt driers can also be combined with Zirconium, lead and Calcium driers for optimum surface and through dry. The specific drier blend should be experimentally determined.
